A Journey Through Our History
The Beginning of the Station
Originally built as part of the West Highland railway line in 1894, the station welcomed travellers exploring the Highlands for generations. Surrounded by stunning scenery, it quickly became a familiar stop for passengers journeying through one of Scotland’s most beautiful rail routes.
Famous Trains on the Line
Even today the line remains one of the most famous railway routes in the world. Luxury trains like the Royal Scotsman, classic Pullman carriages, historic steam trains and even the world-famous “Harry Potter” train regularly pass by the platform.
The Golden Age of Rail Travel
For many years the station was a busy platform where passengers arrived, departed and continued their journeys north. The railway played a vital role in connecting local communities and bringing visitors to this part of the Highlands.

The Commandos Arrive
In March 1942, Spean Bridge Station became a key arrival point for recruits heading to the Commando Basic Training Centre at Achnacarry. Soldiers from across Britain would step off the train here before beginning the demanding training that would prepare them for wartime operations.
Today, the station’s history is remembered through the Commando Memorial nearby, honouring those who trained in the surrounding Highlands.
The Old Station Restaurant
Today the building has been transformed into The Old Station Restaurant. While the purpose has changed, the charm and character of the station remain, creating a dining experience that blends Highland hospitality with railway history.
